Our History

India has become a major tourist attraction for foreigners and the Travel and Tourism Sector is growing fast. To cater to the demands of tourists, a number of star hotels have come up in all major cities and towns as well as in reputed tourist centers. Considering the factors such as fast growth of the tourism sector in India, the great demand for professionals in the field of Hotel Management and catering services and the lack of institutions in South India offering AICTE approved 4-year degree courses in this field, the Technical Education Trust of the Diocese of Palai decided to establish such an institution. Accordingly, St. Joseph’s Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Palai was established in 2010.

The Institute provides an environment conducive to learning and achieving the academic and professional aspirations of the students. We aim to achieve 100 % results in examination and 100 % placement to all who acquire the minimum qualification stipulated by the Industry. Employment opportunities for graduates of these courses are available in Star Hotels, Cruise liners, Airlines, Railways, National and International Event Management, Multi-national Companies and Hospitals. Our former students work in  Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar, Singapore, Ireland, Oman, Italian cruiser, Miami Cruiser, Saudi Arabia, Toronto and Fujairah. We have placed our students in leading hotels like Oberoi, Marriott International, The Taj, Zuri, CGH Earth, Ramada, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Club Mahindra, K.L.R, Owakwood, The Paul, Avenue Regent, Olive Down Town, Leela, Ravis, Arte Central, Marriot, Lemontree, Trident, The PGS Vedanta, The Panoramic Getaway, Radisson Blue and Grand Hyatt.

We are committed to preserving the eco-system and living in harmony with Nature. The institute maintains a green and absolutely clean campus. SJIHMCT follows a strategic planning approach to development insisting on continuous improvement at all levels. Apart from curriculum, the academic team of the Institute always encourage, support and promote students in participating inter-institutional as well as state and national level competitions.
Our students created a record in making 145 different napkin folds in the least possible time, ie., 3 minutes, 37 second and 96 mille seconds in the event “Servietten Falten” which is expected to be included in the next edition of the Limca Book of Records.
In the State level Naipunyam International Skill Summit held in 2015 & 2018 our students won first and second prize in Catering and Restaurant Service. In 2018 the student who represented the Institute was the runner up in the same event for the southern regional summit and became one among the 8 participants in the national level competitions.
The  admission will be conducted  in May/June every year.

Initially the BHM programmes started with an approved intake of 60 which was enhanced as 90 in 2014 and 120 from 2017.

2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 batches have completed the course and all eligible students got placement orders in various hotels. In the final semester university examinations conducted by the Mahatma Gandhi University more than 75 per cent students have passed. The details of results of the above batches are:
